Restoring Memory. Reconstruction of Raphael Santi’s the Portrait of a Young Man

Lecture and Presentation by Dr. Łukasz Nawrocki

The International Center for Training and Research on Cultural Heritage in Danger invites you to a nationwide scientific conference: Recovery and Repatriation of Looted Cultural Property , taking place on May 20 at 12:30 PM in Wrocław, 24 Pretficza Street.

Dr. Łukasz Nawrocki will begin with an exploration of the history and current research on Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man , one of Poland’s most valuable artistic treasures lost during World War II. The presentation will examine the essential material structures and methodological principles for creating accurate reconstructions of Raphael’s 16th-century paintings.
The lecture will highlight Dr. Nawrocki’s innovative approach to authenticating Old Master works, demonstrating how reverse engineering techniques and comparative analyses can illuminate artistic processes. These methods incorporate his recent optical and physicochemical research findings, complemented by selected data from European and American museum collections.
The presentation concludes with a thought-provoking discussion on whether scientific reconstructions can effectively “extend the life” of lost masterpieces, and reveals significant discoveries that emerged from these meticulous analyses.
