dr Łukasz Nawrocki – biography

Painter, sculptor, scientist

Dr. Łukasz Nawrocki comes from a family with artistic traditions. From an early age, he drew, painted, and sculpted under the guidance of his father, Juliusz Nawrocki.

He graduated from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Faculty of Painting, Graphics and Sculpture (2000). He received his doctorate with distinction in conservation and restoration of works of art from the Institute of Monument Studies and Conservation at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (2018). His doctoral dissertation was nominated by the NCU Senate for the Prime Minister’s Award in 2019.

The artist’s education and creative achievements have an interdisciplinary and scientific character. His artistic work and scientific research activities include painting, drawing, sculpture, physicochemical analysis of works of art, and research on the technique and technology of the paintings of the Old Master’s.

In 2023, for his scientific achievements, Dr. Łukasz Nawrocki was honored with the Minister of Education and Science Award, the Medal of the National Education Commission, and the Bronze Medal “Merit to Culture Gloria Artis.” The artist is a recipient of the Rector’s Award from the Academy of Fine Arts and has also received three scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in the field of monument protection and visual arts. He was also a recipient of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Marshal’s Scholarship in the field of artistic creation, monument care, and cultural promotion.

Private study visits and individual research at prestigious museums and art galleries in Western Europe, focusing on the painting techniques and technologies of Raphael Santi, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Leonardo da Vinci, have made him the only artist in the world who creates scientific conservation reconstructions of Renaissance masters’ works using reverse technology. 

He is also the author of scientific conservation reconstructions of priceless works from Polish cultural collections – lost in 1945:

  • “Portrait of a Young Man” by Raphael Santi – the painting was part of the celebrations of the 220th anniversary of the opening of the Temple of Sibyl, the first Polish museum in Puławy, founded by Princess Izabela Czartoryska, and the National Scientific Conference: “To Renew the Past for the Future through Memory – Temple of Sibyl 1801-2021,” Czartoryski Museum.
  • “Madonna of Głogów” by Lucas Cranach the Elder, which the artist permanently donated to the Collegiate Church of Głogów in December 2020, where Cranach’s work had been located from the mid-16th century until 1945. The work can be viewed daily in the Collegiate Church, as well as 24/7 through an internet camera.

He is the author of scientific articles dedicated to the reconstruction of Renaissance masters’ works. Furthermore, he regularly participates in national and international scientific conferences of art conservators and museum professionals. In 2024, he published a monograph “Raphael Santi. Reconstructions and Research,” which was awarded in the Competition of the General Conservator of Monuments and SKZ. The artist is a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP), the Association of Monument Conservators (SKZ), and the Universeum European Academic Heritage Network. The artist’s works have been presented at 7 solo exhibitions and over a dozen group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.

Recognized figure in both artistic and academic circles

The artist is a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers, the Association of Monument Conservators, and the Universeum European Academic Heritage Network.
