Reconstructions of Old Masters' Works

Scientific conservation reconstructions represent the most demanding part of my offer, where exceptional artistry, knowledge, and historical fidelity are absolute priorities. By combining artistic craftsmanship with scientific precision, I create works of extraordinary global value, both aesthetic and substantive. For these projects, I apply additional, specialized procedures:

  • Iconographic and Historical Analysis: Thorough studies of the work’s historical context, its provenance, symbolism, and original purpose.
  • Technological and Material Research: Based on available conservation documentation, physicochemical analyses of original works (where possible), and expertise in the history of painting techniques and technologies. The aim is to identify the materials and techniques used and to understand the structure of the artwork.
  • Experimental Recreation: Conducting tests and trials with historical materials and techniques to achieve the highest possible fidelity to the original.
  • Thorough Documentation: Every stage of the reconstruction, from research to execution, is meticulously documented through photography and detailed descriptions.
  • Certificate: Based on optical and physicochemical analyses of the reconstructed work, a comprehensive, proprietary image certificate is prepared – evidence of execution to the highest standards, considering all essential aspects of the original Old Masters’ works.

Portraits

The portraits I create are not merely reflections of an image but a deep study of character and personality.

I offer:

  • Portraits: Individual, family, and children’s portraits.
  • Painting Techniques: Portraits executed using diverse techniques such as historical painting methods, oil, watercolor, pastel, and refined drawing techniques (pencil, sanguine, black chalk), tailored to the client’s preferences.
  • Process: An individualized approach, from consultation and capturing the essence of the subject to refining every detail.
  • Pricing: Price is individually determined, based on the size, technique, and complexity of the portrait.

Custom Frames

I offer comprehensive services in the design and reconstruction of custom frames, which perfectly complement any artwork – be it historical or contemporary, as well as my own works and reconstructions. Selecting the appropriate frame is crucial to enhance the painting’s character, era, style, and color scheme, while also providing proper protection. I approach each project individually, meticulously attending to every detail. I utilize historical gilding techniques and materials (bole gilding, 22-24 carat gold, shell gold, gilding on mixtion and mordant). Framing artworks is not only about aesthetics but also conservation, which is why I combine artistic craftsmanship with conservation expertise in my work.

Lectures and Workshops

I share my knowledge and experience through lectures and workshops, tailored to the needs of diverse audiences – from art enthusiasts to students and professionals.

Example topics include:

  • “Secrets of Old Masters’ Painting: Techniques from the Middle Ages to the Baroque”
  • “Art Forgeries: How Science Helps Detect Them?”
  • “Art in Laboratories: Discovering the Secrets of Artworks Through Physicochemical Research”
  • “Ethics and Practice of Art Conservation”
  • Possibility of preparing lectures and painting workshops on specific, commissioned topics.

Techniques

I am proficient in a wide range of techniques, allowing me to tailor them to the nature of the commission and the client’s expectations:

  • Oil, Oil-Resin, and Tempera Painting: Old Masters’ techniques that enable achieving depth of color, subtle tonal transitions, and rich textures. Time-consuming, refined multi-layered techniques characteristic of Renaissance painting (underpaintings, glazes, sfumato, chiaroscuro), allowing for diverse effects, from luminous transparencies to saturated, dense surfaces; I also use the alla prima method and various combinations of techniques.
  • Pastel: A dry technique, ideal for rendering soft tonal transitions, luminous and velvety in expression, excellent for portraits.
  • Drawing: Executed with historical and contemporary techniques, e.g., silverpoint, tinpoint, and goldpoint drawing, natural sanguine, black chalk, charcoal, dry pastel, or ink. From precise studies to free sketches, serving as a basis for painting or as standalone works.
  • Gilding: Historical gilding techniques and materials (bole gilding, 22-24 carat gold, shell gold, gilding on mixtion and mordant).
